This is Gratallops, a little old village located at the heart of the Priorat, in the province of Tarragona, one of the most beautiful regions of Catalonia.

Overhanging the Siurana river, Gratallops is in the heart of a licorella (slate) basin, irrigated on the other side by the Montsant river. Gratallops is about 1050 ft. (320 m) over sea and about 16 miles (25 km) from sea (Costa Daurada) as the crow flies.

A Brief History

The tradition says that the village was named Villanova del Pi a long time ago. The land had belonged to the township of Siurana for centuries. This ended up in 1153, with the Moorish Empire's decline, when the Christians started to occupy the land.

The first written reference to Gratallops was found in the "Carta de Población" dated 1258. In this deed, the Convent of Scaladei gave the place and the township of Gratallops to be repopulated. It seems that a castle was built there at the end of the 14th century, but nothing remains today.

Since the 18th century vinegrowing has become the main activity and incidentally olive and almond production. Note that in the 19th century other products such as hemp, fruit and vegetables were also growing there.

Since the end of the Eighties, Gratallops has become a famous place in the wine connoisseur circles. Producers such as Carles Pastrana (Clos de l'Obac, Miserere), René Barbier (Clos Mogador) orAlvaro Palacios (L'Ermita, Les Terrasses) have established their cellars there.
